As someone who covers manufactured outrage campaigns for a living, journalists desperately need to learn how to properly cover these campaigns.

These grafs in NYT don’t give nearly enough context to who Chris Rufo is, or his agenda/track record. Quoting ppl like Rufo as neutral/honest actors is a huge mistake not only bc it launders their abusive, ideologically driven campaigns to mainstream liberals, but also bc it leaves readers less informed abt the motivations behind these attacks.

"Furthest Left" is an interesting phrase here.

Is he saying that centrist milquetoast is the extreme Left now?

I have heard *zero* Communist discourse on NPR and I'm pretty sure that's as far Left as I know how to go.

David Graeber was right about BS jobs, says Max Murphy. Basically, our economy is bifurcating into two kinds of jobs: "essential" jobs that, despite being "essential", are lowly paid and unappreciated, and "BS" (I'm just going to abbreviate) jobs that are highly paid but accomplish nothing useful for anybody. The surprise, perhaps, is that these BS jobs, despite being well paid, are genuinely soul-crushing.

My question, though, is how much of this is due to technological advancement, and will the continued advancement of technology (AI etc) increase the ratio of BS jobs to essential jobs further in favor of the BS jobs?

in reply to Wayne Radinsky

Business in the US is pretty efficient, so businesses are motivated to avoid wasting money on BS jobs.

Hmm are you sure about that? Ok first I will concede there are many businesses for which that is true -- they face stiff competition and have become very efficient.

However, there are "de-facto monopoly" businesses that have bucket tons of money coming in all the time, and they don't have to be efficient. And then there's government jobs -- they don't have any competition and don't have to be efficient. (Is it not the case that government as a percentage of overall employment has been a monotonically increasing function for a hundred years or somesuch?) And there's the intersection of the two -- all the jobs in corporations that exist only to jump though government hoops, and not to provide any benefit in terms of product or service.

in reply to Wayne Radinsky

Yes, all good points. Excessive wealth surely leads to BS jobs. And in my experience business managers are often quite dumb about running their department. So in various departments you'll find BS jobs. Government surely creates BS jobs. But from a systems point of view excessive wealth happens because of a lack of business and monopoly regulation, that is, lack of government involvement. So there's a tradeoff between problems of regulation and the problems of monopolization and non-competitive business environment.. Maybe my concern is treating the problem in terms of jobs, rather than treating the problem in terms of the system. From the individual's point of view, it is their responsibility to go find a better job and at every opportunity vote in a government that keeps businesses in line.

in reply to Wayne Radinsky

Yup. These anti-American seditionists and the boat anchor states that breed them have more or less wasted 10-20 years of our (USian) lives as a consequence of their actions. We have to come together as a people for strength. That's the way forward.

EU only but it is an awesome idea. Hope I can eventually try it out.

The main issue is that they are based, and likely re-use most of the packages, on Arch Linux ARM, which has been going down hill for a while when it comes to maintenance of their repositories.

I think Manjaro ARM suffers from the same thing, as they haven't had a new release since I left over a year ago.

in reply to Strit

Such a bummer, but I suppose ARM devices are a fraction of an already small piece of Linux market share pie.

in reply to Leo

Godspeed. I hope this project will be successful. This would be great for Linux in general.
in reply to Leo

Hope it goes better than in Münich, though

In 2003, Munich announced it would be moving some 14,000 PCs off Windows and to Linux. In 2013, the LiMux project finished, but high associated costs and user dissatisfaction resulted in Munich announcing in 2017 that it would spend the next three years reverting back to Windows.

Yes. I agree with you. I didn't appreciate different taste in music at the time, but I do now. 😊

Kind thx 😊
There is so much interesting music from the different eras that has brought me much joy.
However, there is still music I either don't fully understand & also something that is not at all my taste, despite my open mind..
